What are some well know (pop-culturally) epics that are easy to parody?
I'm writing the feature on a cynical senior's high school career/ memories/ snide remarks in my school paper. I think it would be neat if it was basically a spoof instead of a serious article. I was thinking of starting it like "Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." and kinda carrying it through, but Star Wars has already been done a lot, and I don't really know enough about it to keep it up through the piece. Any suggestions?

I used to be a heavy Wikipedia editor. Sometimes, I spent hours a day editing Wikipedia. I finally kicked the habit a few years back, and now I only make very minor, infrequent edits (fixing grammar and punctuation, improving formatting, that sort of thing). Mostly I quit because I felt like I was spending too much time doing it, but I also quit because of the politics. Too many of my articles were deleted or “merged” (that is, redirected to a larger article without adding any of the content from my stub); some weren’t worth keeping around (I created a *lot* of stupid *Star Wars* articles) but some were well-written and well-researched — they just didn’t meet notability guidelines (supposedly) or whatever. Plus I got tired of all the drama with deletionists vs. inclusionists, etc., and decided to move on with my life.

Yesterday I used this website as an example when explaining to a group of my sixth formers what a blog was; we spent the rest of the lesson reading pokemon articles.

Obviously, good topic idea, since it's what I'm writing about too. I like how you used a really personal example to grab the reader right in the beginning of the intro. Stick with that, for sure, it'll help you state and support your argument. The problem the three of us are probably going to have is trying to avoid the really legal aspects of where the line is drawn for intellectual property and prosumer creativity.
One thing that might help is just blatantly stating the obvious, like I did, that it's definitely not an easy topic to cover, but it's one you're willing to illuminate some aspects of. Something along those lines.
As far as sources go, none of us posted which ones we are using, but I'm going to use “RIP: A Remix Manifesto” and “Be Kind Rewind” for movie references. I'll also be using Jenkins' “Star Wars,” the articles on “Who Owns Popular Culture,” and Burgess and Greens, “The Meanings of Amateur Video.” Hope all of this helped in some way. Good luck with it.
