Ps3 Console - This Here Ps3 Slim Rocks At This Price Point!

1st off I'd like to thank all the reviewer's on this forum for your reviews. On the whole they were highly informative. No way anyone could read this forum and not come away with more than enough information to make a highly informed buying decision.

A. Dent "Aragon" I've gotta give you a gold star in particular for your review. Well done! You covered the key feature and spec differences nicely and I'd like to build on your review, if I may, from a philosophical mindset POV.

Some background.

I'm a software developer of some years. I grew up with MS. I've been developing with their products since DOS 2.0 . I'm an MS boy through and through. pfft, Of course my cell runs Windows Mobile. Ya, Win Mobile has given me fits a time or two, , but I doubt I'll ever own a phone that doesn't run Win Mobile.

I know exactly who MS is. Back in the day they kinda sucked on more than a couple levels but even then, they were still the best software company in the business. Not only has that not changed in my mind but there's no doubt to me that they are currently better at what they do than they've ever been.

Sure, there's any number of SW developers out there working for other companies who are every bit as good as any MS developer out there and oft times better but eh...

At this point, there's no other software company in the world even remotely close to where MS is at in terms of maturity and quality. When I look at what Win 7 is coupled with Visual Studio and the .net 3.5 development platform, eh, those 2 things have always been the heart and soul of who MS is and those 2 things are currently rocking it harder than they ever have, no doubts.

I've always been a hard core gamer in the PC FPS world. So naturally I've known the xBox and played games on the xBox since it's inception.

I'm just saying, I've never owned an xBox. I've known at least 6 peeps with xBoxes. Of those 6, 4 of their boxes failed. Two of them went the RROD route, another had some internal disk failure, and the other had some funky internal connection problem. None of those boxes lasted a year. All of the owners I know went through varying degrees of rig-a-ma-roll trying to get their boxes fixed and/or replaced.

The HW issues and the reasons behind the xboxes unreliability are pretty well documented. Because MS decided to farm out manufacturing early on for the xbox they never really had any true quality control over the product they were tossing out to consumers. They never had a handle. They still don't have all that much of a handle now. Given what I know about MS from the SW world and the fact that they are brand new to the HW biz ...eh, to this day I'm not feeling compelled to pick up an xbox. And no, it's not hardly about money.

To be fair, I am an FPS kinda guy. There's still never been a console + controller + game created that affords me the precision and control in the FPS genre that WASD on a keyboard and a mouse does. I'm still waiting for one?

As I speak I think everyone who owns an xbox today or buys an xbox tomorrow is STILL an early adopter. As it happens I do have more than a passing familiarity with that dynamic. I've dealt and deal with MS product continually every single day. Like I'm saying, I know who MS is. I know how much research and dev went into the xbox.

Speaking strictly within the framework of the FPS gaming genre, I think the xbox is currently the best console platform out there. As well it should be. And it starts with the box and the controller. While the xbox was not designed specifically for Halo, the thinking behind the box, gpu, and the controller were absolutely designed to optimize any and every FPS gaming experience created for the xbox platform. Again, who can argue with that strategy? In the video game industry, what's the best selling genre?

I truly believe MS has the right idea about the console platform in terms of the idea of the overall gaming experience. Also, no doubt to me that various XBL$ issues aside, the XBL platform is superior to the PSN platform as I post.

From MS's inception they've always been many things but fundamentally stupid and obstinate has never really been their hallmark. At least not for long. MS is a whole lot like the Borg. If you've got half a clue about anything they will consume your uniqueness and add it to their own.

The above said I think the xbox 360 controller currently implements a design that exploits the FPS genre best.

To also be fair to the PS platform, from the very beginning the PS controller in all it's incarnations was never designed to exploit any specific gaming genre. The PS controller has always been designed to cast a much broader net across gaming genre's.

So the question remains, given the fact that I am and will always be an MS boy, why is it I've never ever owned an xbox? Why was my very 1st console purchase evar this slimboy PS3 Console?

Heheh, it's really a no brainier for me. This PS3 Console is absolutely THE best media center on the market today.

Nothing else comes close to the PS3 Console at this price point given what it can do. I've already got a PC for serious gaming. That said I'm about to explore the latest exclusive PS3 Console gaming titles to eval where the state of the art is really at.

Seriously, the xbox comes closest for about an initial 50-150+ but even then the xbox can't output any media in any format at 1080p. See, for me? That right there is a deal breaker.

MS can KMA right now. The xbox is not there yet.

I think MS might still be butt hurt to this day behind choosing the wrong side in the HD war. Whatever? Until they ship with Blu-Ray, built in WiFi at a competitive price, AND they can deliver a reliable and quality product they're dead to me in this market segment.

UPDATE:
I'm still completely in love with this console and what it brings to the table. I think it's definitely the best console on the market at it's current price point. Once again...

Pros:
1) Fricken Blu-Ray! Anyone with a quality 1080p TV understands exactly what I'm talking about. There are Blu-Ray players out there at this price point that only do that. And none of them are exactly superior.

2) Fricken integrated WiFi! Pardon me but I can't understand how anyone with a wireless router could not have a deep and abiding appreciation for that extremely salient point. Full on streaming capabilities out of the box. Hello?

3) Awesome gaming platform! I think it's every bit as good and viable as the xBox platform. Both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses. Both platforms have their signature series that are arguably best of breed. I think the Halo series is prolly the best FPS series created for a console. PS3 Console has the Metal Gear Solid and God Of War series which are arguably both best of breed within their genres.

This brings me around to cross platform games. Specifically, cross platform games that target the HW strength's of a given platform. Take a game like Ninja Gaiden II for the xBox and sigma 2 for the this slim boy. In the end, I think sigma 2 version provides a better overall gaming experience for the following reasons.

a) Again, it's a fricken 1080p game!
b) Because it was released on the xb platform 1st, Tecmo had the op to learn from their mistakes. At certain times they pushed to many polygons in the xb version and you could experience moderate to severe frame rate drops at highly inopportune times. I think the fighting platform on the slim boy has a more fluid feel. I know part of that is because generally speaking you face fewer enemies in sigma 2 but I think that's as it should be. What's the point in throwing more enemies at a gamer than the HW can effectively handle?

Here's my point. Given the fact that the xBox is not shipping with Blu-Ray and WiFi, it comes down to the gaming platform and it's reliability, right?

I'm just saying I don't see how anyone could compare the two platforms and declare the xBox the winner. What would that be based on? I mean Halo is a pretty cool game and tons of fun but so what? For me? A game like Halo could never tip the scales when it comes to buying a console. From my perspective a bitchen gaming title or 2 is not enough. There's plenty different bitchen arse games for the PS3. I think that in terms of most bang for your buck this PS3 slim boy rules right now.

Don't get me wrong. I'm an MS fan boi through and through. Ex: I've got what was a top of the line cell 2 years ago that runs win mobile 6 that I would relly like to upgrade right now. The user interface is pretty clunky by today's standards but I'm not gonna upgrade right now for 2 reasons. 1) The cell hw still supports the HSDPA 7.2 protocol. To the best of my knowledge there are still no phones available in the US that support the latest 14.0 protocol. 2) I know the next gen cells are coming out around early September. They'll be sporting the new win 7 mobile OS (think zune) with capacitive resistance touchscreens (think iPhone) and they'll be supporting HSDPA 14.0 protocol in upgradeable firmware.

So I wait. I wait because I am an MS fanboi and on a certain indirect level they kinda own me. When I think about it, it's possible I might not be making the money I do if not for their arses. I wait because based on what I understand about what's in the pipeline, I expect the win 7 cells to rock the house. I wait because 9 of 10 times I will always choose and trust in MS. I got zero problems being an early adopter in the cell arena because MS is doing what they do best and they do not have a heavy hand in the hw.

In the end the iPhone OS is not a preemptive multitasking OS and it won't be in the near future. Nor is the droid OS. And no phones running those operating systems currently support HSDPA 7.2 let alone the latest 14.0 standard.

I realize I've digressed a bit but I did it for a reason. I'm highly disappointed with MS within the console arena right now. The PS3 Console slim boy 120 at it's current price point, I think, is a completely superior product to the xBox. Hands down. Any way you wanna look at it you get far more for your money with the PS3 Console.

Until MS starts shipping consoles with Blu-Ray and WiFi around the same price point I personally don't even see them as real competition to the PS3 Console. If they do ever get there I will snatch an xBox up right pronto like.

And it's the Blu-Ray standard that might hold the xBox back indefinitely. Like I'm saying, they're definitely still smarting behind choosing the wrong side in the HD media battle.

Whilst MS is fairly accustomed to licensing tech from various vendors, I'm pretty sure licensing Blu-Ray from Sony under these circumstances is not exactly how they're thinking. Not saying it'll never happen. Just saying MS doesn't usually look to bust out the knee pads under these circumstances. So where does that leave the xBox?

The way I see it MS has 3 options.

1) Bust with the pads for Sony.
2) Remain incompatible with Blu-Ray. Not seeing this option as a sales booster, per se.
3) Find and align themselves with a company who's got an idea about a media format that eclipses Blu-Ray by a reasonable measure.

Pretty hard to see 3 happening within the next 5 years. 2 is like meh? 2 is tantamount to anathema for the xBox. 1 is what they should do in the near term. If MS can ship a box that supports Blu-Ray with integrated WiFi around the same price point as the PS3 Console, regardless of the quality of the product they're shipping, there's no doubt that would boost their sales immeasurably.

Cons:

XBL blows doors on the PSN. Pretty much no comparison. Tons of integration on XBL that the PSN can't be bothered with.

The PS3 Console browser is weak to be sure.

For my third tattoo, i'm going to get a word in hawaiian on my wrist or foot. In white ink. The reason for hawaiian, is in tribute to my families past. We call ourselves war native hawaiians, and we cherish and love hawaiian culture. My grandma and mother both are known as Tutu to the grandkids, and we have hawaiian art and influences all around our house. I was going to get something to remind me always of something. either a phrase or words saying to always go towards my goals, to never give up on then, just reach for that star...anything around that..... OR something simple like aloha. or forever aloha. or something with aloha in it....i dont know let me know if u have any suggestions

A Brief History Of Arcade Games

Gaming is already a part of our lifestyle. Starting in childhood, once we see moving images of gaming characters, we have the curiosity to try controlling it. It lasts until our teenage and adult years; we consider gaming as one of the entertainment alternatives when we are feeling bored.

Different genres of games are starting to pop up such as online strategy and role-playing games. But do you still remember the good old arcade games? That Pac-man eating yellow dots and Mario and Luigi consuming mushrooms and flowers to rescue the princess from King Koopa? These games are considered to be the ancestors of the games that you play today on your computer or videogame station.

History Reminisced

Old arcade games started after World War II, after Ralph Bauer invented the perception of creating an electronic game system to the television screen during the early 1950's. When he presented his ideas to Magnavox, a television company during that time, it was approved and resulted in the release of a refined version of Bauer's Brown Box prototype, which is known as the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972.

It displays only spots of light on the computer screen and it requires the use of translucent plastic overlays to reproduce the appearance of the game. In other words, this gaming version is prehistoric compared to present gaming standards.

The first gaming console system that was invented is known as the Atari 2600, which was released in 1977. It used plug-in cartridges in order to play different games.

After the release of Atari 2600, old arcade games started their Golden Age in the gaming industry. This is considered to be the era when the popularity of such games increased drastically. It began in the late 1979 when the first colored arcade game appeared.

Old arcade games started to gain their momentum in the gaming industry during the release of the following:

• Gee Bee and Space Invaders in 1978
• Galaxian in 1979
• Pac-man, King and Balloon, Tank Battalion, and others in 1980

During this era, arcade game developers began experimenting with new hardware, developing games, which used the lines of vector displays as opposed to the standard raster displays. Few arcade games derived from these principle, which became a hit including the Battlezone (1980) and the Star Wars (1983), which are all from Atari.

After the vector displays, arcade game developers were experimenting with the laser-disc players for delivering animations like in the movies. The first attempt is the Dragon Lair (1983) by Cinematronics. It became a sensation when it was released (there are instances that the laser-disc players in many machines malfunctioned due to overuse).

New controls were also cropped up in few games, although joysticks and buttons are still the arcade game standard controls. Atari released the Football in 1978 which used the trackball. The Spy Hunter introduced a steering wheel with resemblance to an actual one, and the Hogan's alley made use of tethered light guns.

Other specialty controls like the pedals in racing games and a crossbow-shaped gun in Crossbow were also developed in this era.

Now, with the enthusiasm of modern game developers, they tried to revive this old arcade games by means of enhancing its graphics and producing newer versions. This manifestation only shows that good old arcade games are still a great alternative to modern computer games.

Help I need my title to have a font style like Star Wars?

Hey I'm trying to title this page and I want the title page to have that font like STar Wars. Is there a font for that on Word Perfect or on Photoshop? I looked on the word art and there is a word art that looks like it's about to fall backwards like the Star Wars logo does, but it has the letter's shadows showing and i don't want that. I just realized that making the first letter in italic gave the word that slanted look on the left side but there isn't an opposite italic (unless there is and i don't know) help suggestions?

Oh and the font i'd like to see looks like Star Wars or the comic book "Supreme power".

Trademark- If a wd. art is trademarked on a state level, can you surpass it with a Federal trademark?

My teacher brought in a trademark/copyright lawyer and he said to the class that we should just get state trademarks b/c they're cheaper. But if I was to get a word art trademarked (like Star Wars is trademarked) could someone nab my word art trademark on the federal level (even if i would have it protected in my state)

Please help I'm confused

In short, a state trademark is useful if you operate solely in one state and do not have plans for expansion. If the state mark was in use before the date of first use of the federally registered mark, the prior state user may have some rights to use the mark, but those rights would be limited to a certain geographical area, usually the state where the mark has been registered and used.

The Lost Art of Levitation

An old joke goes, “How do angels fly?”

The answer is, “They take themselves lightly.”

One evening I uncovered the core of truth in this joke. Little did I imagine that the joke was being totally literal.

I was attending a lecture of Michio Kushi, one of my spiritual mentors, when he became very frustrated with his Los Angeles audience of several hundred metaphysical seekers. He was attempting to convey to us an understanding of the physics of life, the fundamental mechanism of creation and transformation in life processes. Sensing he wasn’t getting his message across, Michio decided to get more simple and basic. He emphasized the fact that the core nature of all life is energy, declaring, "The world is all energy. Everything is energy. And if you understand that, you can understand the real dynamics behind how things happen the way they do in the ‘so-called’ physical universe."

The audience was comprised of bright, curious people of all ages and backgrounds. However, few of us were understanding Michio on the fundamental level he was trying to communicate. Exasperated, he switched to an experiential tack, announcing abruptly and emphatically, "All right. I'll demonstrate what I’m talking about."

Michio knelt down in the traditional Japanese manner on his knees, put his hands together in a prayer-like position, closed his eyes and sat very still. After several minutes, his body began to slowly lift off the ground to a height of about three feet. There he remained for ten minutes, suspended in the air several feet above the floor. Now he had my attention!

I was astonished, of course. Then I impulsively did something that, in retrospect, seems very irrational and even humorous. But at the time, the maneuver made sense to me.

My mind’s orderly framework of reality was being severely challenged by Michio’s airborne body. I needed to do something to psychologically feel more in control. If I was being forced to expand my belief in what is humanly possible on this earth, I was going to make sure the phenomenon was authentic. I had to do something that would give the apparent impossibility I was witnessing some sense of validity.

In a childlike way, I felt the levitation would be more real for me if I knew firsthand that nothing was underneath his body. I was sitting in the front row of the audience. I reached underneath Michio’s hovering body, pretending my only intention was to grab a notebook behind him. I discovered Michio was, indeed, floating in midair! There was only empty space underneath him. Inserting myself physically into the incomprehensible picture before me made the whole scene more authentic for me.

After about ten minutes, Michio’s body gently descended to the floor. He opened his eyes and shared offhandedly, “Levitation is very easy. It is a natural, simple process. You all can do it.”

Then he proceeded to tell us how to levitate. He spoke casually, as if he were describing how to ride a bicycle, “You simply empty your mind and clear your consciousness. Eliminate yourself of ego and self-absorption. When you are completely purged of awareness of the small self, of identifying with the personality, you are free to move with the natural rhythm of the universe. You are no longer weighted down with self-concern and limiting beliefs. You are then able to utilize the electro-magnetic wave energy that moves between the earth and the sun, moon, planets and all the heavenly bodies in the universe.”

Sensing that he was losing his audience again, he paused and then elaborated, “On a hot day, you can actually see the wave motion of this universal energy as it undulates the air over hot pavement. You can measure the powerful effect of this energy on the ocean: this invisible force causes the sea to rise and fall, creating the ocean tides. You can see this pattern of universal pulsation in the rolling of the ocean waves, the rhythm of rock strata in canyons and the formation of sand dunes in the desert. This universal, undulating motion creates all the spiral patterns you find in nature—from whirls in sea shells, twirling plant growth, twisted tree trunks and swirling ocean currents to water funnels going down the drain. The natural flow of life is an energy wave motion, up and down, in and out. All the wavelike patterns and spiral formations you find in nature exist because natural elements are fluid and flexible enough to flow with the natural wave energy current of life. When you become light enough, clear enough of ego-concern, you can let this wave energy move you as well. That's all levitation is.”

Sensing his audience was close to grasping his meaning, Michio tossed out examples for them to identify with. “Observe children, dogs and wild animals tap into this universally available energy source. To them, it’s natural. Haven’t you seen children and dogs in a park or on a beach as they run and jump all day without getting tired? If a child or dog feels especially happy and carefree, you’ll see them jumping two or three times higher than they normally can. We all know wild animals have extraordinary abilities to jump and leap, as well as run long distances very fast and long. Indigenous, tribal natives who retain their childlike innocence and openness in adulthood can run 100 miles in a single day without being tired. This is because they are light and empty enough to flow with universal energy. They allow the natural energy pulsation between the earth and other bodies to propel them. That is what the Star Wars screenwriter meant when he said, “May the Force be with you.” His characters had learned how to surf the Force. When you become fluid and malleable, you also can ride this energy and float."

Immediately after the lecture, I ran up to Michio, voicing my excitement over what I witnessed. He turned to me and smiled one of those accepting smiles I came to love.

“Most will not remember the levitation, Keith.”

I protested, exclaiming that, of course, they’d remember such a fantastic display of levitation, not to mention actual instructions on how anyone could do it. He simply shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe some. But very few.”

Determined to prove him wrong, I joined the attendees milling about the lecture hall and questioned small pockets of people about what they witnessed. To my astonishment, the majority of the audience didn’t see Michio levitate; they perceived him simply kneeling in meditation!

A minority of the audience did witness the levitation. Yet, of the people who stated that evening that they saw his body float, only a handful stuck by their statement the following day. The rest of the witnesses could no longer remember having seen the body levitate!

I reminded these witnesses that they had admitted seeing the feat just the evening before. But they took back their words—and their experience. As one observer replied incredulously, "Oh, no. I never said that. I never saw that. All I saw was Michio kneeling on the floor." They changed their story and their memory by the next morning!

What an awakening for me! I was forced to recognize how strenuously we humans hold onto our current, familiar, thus comfortable, views of reality.

On three other occasions, I observed Michio suspend his body in midair for ten minutes in front of several hundred people. After each demonstration, I questioned people in the same way I did after the first levitation. The same pattern played out: admission on the day of the event followed by a retraction the next day! Seeing, then denying. When I followed up the next day with professed witnesses of the event, most of them changed their story. Overnight, the fact of a fascinating levitation was demoted to a memory of mere grounded meditation. Only a few of the witnesses retained the experience of the levitation from the evening it happened until the next morning!

Furthermore, with the passage of time, even the few people who remembered the levitation the morning after, began to reinterpret, invalidate or completely forget they ever witnessed Michio float in the air. In other words, the further in time we got from the actual miracle, the fewer people remembered seeing it.

The only witnesses who remembered over time that they witnessed Michio levitate were people who saw him—or another gifted being—levitate on more than one occasion.

What’s going on here? I asked myself. What a lesson in the filtering power of our programmed preconceptions. We only see what we’re conditioned to see. We only perceive what we expect to perceive!

Over the years, I’ve found this perceptual filtering often goes along with the witnessing of supernormal abilities. I call it “spiritual amnesia.” The mind works fast to cover up any evidence that contradicts its own rigid perimeters regarding what is possible in its world. This malady is like a 24-hour flu virus. It’s easy to catch in our culture. The effects of the syndrome last just long enough to wipe out any memory of an unusual event that doesn’t fit into our expected range of possibilities! By the next day, the extraordinary event is either made ordinary by the mind and memory, or forgotten altogether.

In my career as a journalist covering natural disasters and crisis situations, I’ve encountered the invalidating effect of spiritual amnesia after every major superhuman feat that was out of the box—beyond the envelop or scope of what most people believe is possible. A prime example is the seemingly extraordinary ability of people to lift and keep aloft heavy vehicles until a loved one or stranger is rescued from danger. In the making of a documentary on the subject, I found out this act of extra-normal strength has occurred at least once in practically every community in the country! And, as with levitation, it’s usually only those people who have witnessed this extraordinary human ability more than once who are able and willing to remember that it occurred at all.

Later that same year, I fell victim to the insidious power of spiritual amnesia in my own psyche. Until a friend at work mentioned levitation one day, I never considered attempting this skill myself. Recounting Michio’s floating feat to my co-worker, I got so re-invigorated about the subject that I decided to try to levitate when I got home from work that very evening. I planned to use Michio’s technique of tapping into universal wave energy. Yet, by the time I got home that evening, I totally forgot about my intentions to levitate!

It was months later that some reference in my environment again triggered my memory of wanting to levitate. Again, I forgot my plans by the time I was in a suitable situation to act on them. The same lapse of memory and carry-through concerning my notions to levitate occurred many times over the following years. I usually remembered my objective to levitate when I was at work during the day, only to forget again by the time I got home in the evening. It ultimately took writing down the levitation plans on paper during the day for me to remember it in the evening!

When the auspicious event finally occurred, it took me several hours to empty myself of self-absorption and quiet my mind enough to successfully tap into the electro-magnetic energy force field Michio mentioned in his lectures. Finally, I felt very clear and calm. My kneeling body started to lift off the floor! I felt my body rising. I opened my eyes, looked down and saw I was about a foot off the ground. As soon as I saw that startling reality, my whole body was immediately filled with the thunderous sound of "NNNOOOOO!!!!” This heavy, loud “NO!” filled every cell of my body, and I came crashing to the floor.

It took me years to recover psychologically from that “NO!” I felt very guilty, as if I had done something wrong and prohibited—like I’d committed some crime against nature. Several years passed before I tried levitation again. The same thing happened. I started lifting off the floor. I noticed that I had the thought, I'm levitating. I'm rising. And as soon as the reality of the floating hit my awareness, again, immediately, this loud, forceful, heavy “NO!” pervaded my body. It came from every cell in my body, and from deep within myself. I crashed to the floor.

Not one to give up on something I really want, I tried levitation again years later. This time I attempted my experiment with two friends, Giana and Steve. During an evening of intimate, honest conversation, I told them the story of Michio’s levitation. "Let's try it," they exclaimed in unison. Giana and Steve were the first people with whom I shared his story who were motivated to try to levitate themselves.

With all our excitement and expectation, it took hours of meditation for us to get quiet and clear our minds. When we finally did empty our minds, we all began to rise at the same time. I saw their bodies lifting off the floor. However, as soon as Giana and Steve noticed they were a foot above the floor, they came crashing down together. Watching their descent triggered me into “thinking.” I came right down after them.

Like me, Giana and Steve felt a strong sensation of shame and guilt—like they had done something wrong or prohibited. That night, we talked about our levitation experiment at length. But the next morning the “spiritual amnesia” had already set in and we all went off to work without mentioning the miraculous occurrence of the previous evening. And none of the three of us ever referred to that evening’s adventure again in the following years of acquaintance. I have since lost touch with both friends.

I often wonder if I could entice Giana and Steve to remember the evening we explored the wonder of surfing the waves of the universe. I often wonder if I could entice myself to fly again. With considerable embarrassment, I must admit I haven’t made another attempt to levitate since my exploits with Giana and Steve. I’m waiting for the right moment and situation. It hasn’t felt intuitively right for me to re-attempt flight. I haven’t gotten the impetus or clearance from my inner coach to undertake another experiment in expanding my known universe in this way.

My reluctance can be further explained through the inherent meaning of the word experiment. When we take a look at the Latin components, we discover the source of the word’s meaning: Ex-to go out of, beyond. Periment-perimeter, boundary, border, periphery. Experiment-to go beyond the boundary. According to Webster’s, another Latin root of the word contributes to a deeper understanding: pericul-danger, trial, test. Thus, experiment-danger in going beyond the boundaries—which is what a lot of us feel when we test the borders of our known world.

Through much exploration, I’ve learned the wisdom of waiting for intuitive guidance as to when, how far and under what circumstances I venture into new, uncharted territory. The perils are considerable in barging ahead heedless of one’s inner compass. Someday soon, I hope to get the go-ahead again from my inner coach that I am strong and clear enough to go beyond my old, known borders to enjoy “the incredible lightness of being.”

which characters were underdeveloped?
Who was the hero of each of the respective episodes? Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi? Who was the hero of the original trilogy? And who was the hero of the whole saga?

My absolute favorites are Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, but I like all the other characters except Emperor Palpatine, Jabba The Hutt, Queen Amidala, Darth Maul, Jar-Jar Binks, Nute Gunray, and Darth Sideous. I think Qui-Gon was a underdeveloped character in the movies but he got a book series so you could read the back story. And Chewbacca is really underdeveloped. Episode 1, Qui-Gon [he really thought he was helping when he found Anakin], Episode 2 Yoda, Episode 3 Obi-Wan, Episode 4 Obi-Wan, Episode 5 Han, Episode 6 Anakin. The hero of the original trilogy was Leia and the hero of the entire trilogy was Obi-Wan.

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy – a Retrospective

The original “Star Wars” trilogy was a cinematic landmark and a fond fixture in popular culture. I was not fortunate enough to see the original trilogy in its first run at the cinema although I did get to see the updated Special Editions when they were released. My introduction to the original films was television, and constantly re-watching them on home video. I remember going through “Empire” the most, as well as the darker scenes from “Jedi”, conveniently fast-forwarding through any scenes featuring ewoks. The original trilogy offered strong story telling, compelling and likeable characters, as well as spectacular images and a riveting soundtrack by master composer John Williams.

So where does the new prequel trilogy stack up against the brilliantly done originals? I guess it depends on how you look at it.

“The Phantom Menace”, or “Episode I”, generated an unprecedented amount of anticipation, so much so that there was no way this film was going to live up to expectations. I was certainly caught up in it all, having pre-bought the tickets weeks before and was all ready for a completely new Star Wars film.

The one thing I do remember after walking out of the cinema that day was being visually overwhelmed. I actually did not know what to think at all. I do not recall feeling anything negative about the film, or positive for that matter. I just felt I had seen something that was altogether different to the original films; that and my retinas needed to adjust to the real world after being bombarded with the cinema’s most over-burdened and detailed CGI shots in history. Visually, the film was a lot to process.

Unlike a lot of fans, I did not hate Jar Jar, I did not hate Jake Lloyd, and in general I did not hate what I saw. Looking back, I realised that I enjoyed it despite it being a bit ‘lite’ on story; but looking at in context of the original films and the other prequels, there were some major problems, least of which was the criminally underused Darth Maul.

“Attack Of The Clones” seems to get the gong for ‘silliest Star Wars title’. We were promised a more darker tone, but I would say we got a ‘sombre’ tone instead. This film introduced the world to Hayden Christensen as the young Anakin, and soon to be evil Darth Vader. Not good. Christensen seemed miscast to me, and for the most part he looks lost in a complicated role. In the end, it damages the film’s standing only marginally because the film is really about the images, action and universe-ending melodrama, but somehow it manages to make “The Phantom Menace” a solid acting piece.

The plot for “Episode II” does manage to install Palpatine as the Supreme Chancellor and create the Storm Troopers seen in the original trilogy, so in this respect, it’s much ‘meatier’ than “Episode I”. An all digital Yoda is a revelation and a masterpiece of CGI and voicework. A friend of mine said at the time that they could have just had the two minute Yoda fight scene looped for two hours and it probably would have made even more money than it did.

And then came “Revenge of the Sith”. For many fans, this was the film that “Episode I” should have been. It’s easily the best of the prequels, mainly because it actually fosters a sense of sinister drama, and because it does not contain any fat in the story telling: a major negative for the other prequels. This was an enjoyable film to watch, and for the first time, almost all the CGI actually looked perfect. And you got to see some great moments, particularly anything to do with Palpatine and his transformation in to the Emperor of the universe. The last twenty minutes of the film are unexpected from a tone point of view; you have not really seen anything that dark in a Star Wars film, but it is very welcome from a dramatic point of view.

When watching the prequels, if you do not nitpick too much at what you have seen, you will find them all a very cinematic, enjoyable experience and worth the price of admission. Of course, Star Wars fans will nit-pick. And they would be justified in doing so because the prequels do not hold up well under scrutiny.

George Lucas said in the “Episode I” DVD documentary that the two trilogies rhyme; in essence, similar things happen in both trilogies but the stories ultimately end up taking different paths based on different outcomes at crucial moments. If this rhyming notion is accurate, why is Anakin nine years old in “Episode I” while Luke is eighteen or so in “Episode IV”? Why was Darth Maul not a central figure in “Episode I” like Darth Vader in “Episode IV”? Where was the Jar Jar Binks style character in “Episode IV”? You could go on and on. He may have been trying to get the trilogies to be synchronous, but it did not happen.

Then there is just the general laziness in the story telling, most likely due to the fact that there was not enough story to sustain three films. Anakin’s turn to the dark side is completely arbitrary. In “Episode III”, he goes from being conflicted about Palpatine and wanting to serve the Jedi to becoming Darth Vader in a matter of minutes. In “Episode II”, we only see Anakin’s mother for one scene, yet her death is the beginning of Anakin’s journey to the dark side. I would have thought that spending a lot more time developing the most crucial scenes in the trilogy would been the way to go instead of endless scenes of CGI (the wookie battle or the pod-race comes to mind). Although I did not hate Jar Jar, he does not really have a place in the story structure of the six films aside from selling toys (okay, George made him relevant in “Episode II” but I think that was more thanks to fan reaction than anything else).

The most important developments in the trilogy are glazed over yet that is what we came to see. Ewan McGregor once said the prequels were about the ‘background’ and it is true; the images are truly astounding. It is a shame the same level of detail was not applied to the screenplays.

In many ways, the prequel trilogy is the embodiment of the modern blockbuster; entertaining for a few hours, and maybe even on a few repeat viewings, but then ultimately disposable. That may be a little harsh because they are better than the majority of blockbusters that have come out of Hollywood in recent years, but they are also Star Wars films and probably deserved better treatment. They will never achieve the high water mark of the original trilogy, nor should they. They are different films for a different generation. For the fans I would say, enjoy them for what they are and do not compare. It is really the only way to watch the prequels.
