What are some good ideas for a graffiti-art style feature wall in a bedroom?

My room has four walls which are plain at the moment, they have been painted a light grey/white. My bed is against a wall, when you lie in it you can see my biggest wall straight ahead. This is the wall I want to spray paint and stencil, but I'm not sure what to do =/ I want a sort of an asian/nature/banksy style theme, and include graffiti in it. Art and Textiles helps- need ideas!

I am making a large textiles piece for art, and the theme is Aboriginal culture combining with modern, street culture. I already had an idea, started it and decided I didn't like it, so now I have to use the banksy figure, the girl with a heart shaped balloon. Does anyone have any ideas to how I can combine Aboriginal and Urban culture?
I love these ideas, but I forgot to mention the work has to be on a 80cm by 80cm canvas, and still be textiles...

What about using a classic modern clothing-like jeans-you could go to goodwill etc to buy-cut and lay them out and cover in aboringine patterning-sharpies would work great! Also the images could be figures listening to ipods or skating or hip hop dancing-so doing modern things in a primitative drawing. I saw a painting once in classic Japanese style but everyone was surfing those waves or walking with boom boxes-it was great! Same type of idea. Why can't you "prime" over your figure?

A quote by the artist banksy stating that the modern world is addicted to celebrity culture that seems to promote people who have no admirable qualities. It seems no one is happy in themselves if their not on bl***y television these days.

That's a very insightful observation by Banksy; it does seem that everybody these days can easily be made to be famous. He's also mis-quoting Andy Warhol who in 1979 stated that "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." which has certainly become true. Banksy is predicting a reversal of this trend.

What would you think of getting a wrist tattoo?

What i want is a banksy style tattoo
The one with the little girl and a balloon,
It's for my 18th and i'm getting it this saturday
However there is two Banksy style balloons

One with the girl floating away with loads of balloons

And one with the girl with the red heart balloon floating away

I want the girl being floated up by the red heart balloon so it's a mixture of the two.

I think it sounds lovely. Just be sure that you are going to love looking at it when you are old and wrinkly. Also, I have some tattoos that I like, but wish I had put them somewhere less visible. There are still a lot of people with negative perceptions of tattoos, and when I was 18 I did not know I would join a profession where tattoos need to be hidden. It can be a pain in the rear.

And I like that heart. So cute. I may steal your idea for myself!

The Increasing Vandalism of Banksy Canvas Art

One can never put a price on an authentic Banksy canvas art form. Yet it seems that an increasing number of online auction sites are capitalising on this opportunity to make huge sales online. The main reason for this is due to the increasing vandalism of his works.

Destroying partially and fully

Banksy canvas art has always been categorised within the Graffiti Art segment. However, this is a tag put forth by persons who dislike his work. These could be anyone from his peers, who do not like the media attention showered on Banksy’s works or anyone from society, who dislikes the messages in his paintings. Many times, a Banksy canvas art piece has been partially destroyed with roller paint. At other times, the entire piece has been chipped off or damaged completely. Thus, in such cases, the work is irretrievably damaged. No rectification work can revive this painting. Given the fact that an increasing number of such paintings are being destroyed these days, Banksy canvas art is becoming more of a rarity.

A rare piece

In recent times, unscrupulous individuals have destroyed many pieces of Banksy canvas art. Often, the painting is destroyed within a few days of the work painted. This has resulted in many opportunistic people who post pictures of his works online on popular auction sites just to get money from the sale. Since Banksy canvas art is becoming such a rarity, it is natural that admirers of his artwork are lapping up any last pieces of a destroyed work. There have been many times, when the price of a destroyed Banksy painting was close to 150000 to 200000 pounds! Celebrities of the likes of Christina Aguilera have purchased several of his paintings. It is almost as though having a Banksy canvas art painting in your home is like a status symbol.

Pieces destroyed

In recent times, some of the prominent Banksy canvas art paintings destroyed include the ‘little diver’, ‘chalk farm maid’ and the ‘mild mild west’ painting. These three paintings have received some of the highest amounts of praise from people across the world. In the case of ‘little diver,’ the painting was destroyed when the protective acrylic glass was damaged. The painting was estimated to be over 400000 pounds in worth, The Banksy canvas art painting called ‘chalk farm maid’ was destroyed using whitewash. People speculate that rival graffiti artists destroyed his work. In fact, the destroyed piece even had a message written in red, which read ‘all the best – vida’. The ‘mild mild west’ painting was destroyed because of splattering red paint all over the work.

Sad but true

It is a fact that individuals are destroying many a Banksy canvas art consistently across London. However, what is sad is that these paintings are not just graffiti. These represent society with a powerful message hidden in them. What is sadder is the fact that instead of replacing the painting with another beautiful image, all that is left is a coat of red paint or whitewash. This is what has appalled the people of London tremendously.

Does anyone know who this picture is by?

Ok, i don't know how to get the picture on here but it's pretty easy to explain - its a pink background with white flowers and has a purple soldier in the foreground with the words 'war is not pretty' , also in purple. It looks a bit stencilled or printed, so i think it could be by Banksy, but i'm not quite sure - i couldnt find a source for it on the web page. Can anyone help??

Ideas for graffiti project?

I'm doing a graffiti project at school. Basically, we have to create a piece of art (legally) highlighting a common social issue in our country. It can be pretty much anything, based on anti-war, anti-fascism, atheism, or anything else. We have been looking at the work of Banksy for inspiration. Any ideas?

Have you seen reverse graffiti? It's made with stencils and a jet washer, and instead of making marks, the artist uses the grime of the city. The bits that get washed are much cleaner than the rest of the wall/pavement, and so show up very clearly.
Some artists are so good that they use the pressure washer to create different tones.
Try googling "reverse Graffiti"
It is very cool, and you could use it to make your social message stronger - making the dirt and grime of the city the very thing that you are highlighting.

Banksy is the World's Most Wanted Graffiti Artist

You can see graffiti in every country in the world. It often defaces walls, poles, trains and the fronts and sides of buildings. Graffiti is considered undesirable vandalism to its victims who spend time and money to paint over or wash it off their property. Indeed, graffiti painting is an ongoing problem in many subway stations and on public walkways, signs, cement walls, and other locations.

However, on the streets of the United Kingdom near London, an artist called Banksy continues to gain international recognition and fame for his graffiti. The fact is that Banksy's "street art" has become immensely popular with both pedestrians and private art collectors alike. In the last several years, there have been a number of exhibitions and auctions of Banksy's art work as his popularity has soared.

The growing popularity of his art is in evidence in the secondary market where a painting titled “Space Girl and Bird” sold for $575,000 in an auction event last year (2007). In fact, Banksy's art can now be found in many private art collections worldwide. Banksy has also produced leaflets and books on art and has his own website. He self-published his first three books, “Existencilism,” “Banging Your Head Against a Brick Wall,” and “Cut It Out.”

His latest book called, “Wall and Piece,” was published by Random House and has already sold more than two hundred and fifty thousand copies. Nevertheless, Banksy continues to keep his real identity secret to avoid arrest and prosecution. His anonymity is said to be born of a desire to be a “quality vandal” and to elude the police. He once said, “Imagine a city where graffiti wasn’t illegal, a city where everybody could draw wherever they liked, where the street was awash with a million colors and little phrases. . . . A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business.” He has a unique view of the art world as well. He has said, “The art world is the biggest joke going. It’s a rest home for the over-privileged, the pretentious, and the weak.”

Banksy's graffiti began appearing on trains and walls around Bristol, England in 1993. By 2001, his street art could be seen all over the United Kingdom. His art has a distinctive style which makes it easy to recognize. It features attention to detail and uses layered stenciling and spray paint. Banksy uses familiar images and his pictures contain dark humor and are often controversial. His art is often focused around anti-war, anti-establishment, and anti-capitalism themes. Sometimes Banksy's works have a pro-freedom message.

Banksy uses rats as images in many of his pictures. His most famous street paintings are a series of black-and-white stenciled rats. Many of these rats are created to be larger than life. The rats have become immensely popular with London pedestrians. A “gangster rat,” painted on a wall near the Smithfield market, wears a peace-sign medallion and carries a sign that says “Welcome to Hell.” Another rat holds a sign that reads, “Please love me.”

Other Banksy art features the image of two policemen kissing painted on a public wall. In another picture a military helicopter is adorned with a pink bow. Winston Churchill has a Mohawk haircut in another. He has even produced revisionist oil paintings such as Mona Lisa with a yellow smiley face, and a pastoral landscape surrounded by crime-scene tape. Banksy, dressed in a disguise, installed them in the Louvre and the Tate.

Banksy often uses public walls as a background to display his art. Although recently he has been creating art on canvas as well. In addition, Banksy sometimes enters museums and galleries to add his own art to the museum collections. In the last several years, Banksy's street art has been seen internationally. It has been found in the Middle East on Israel's West Bank barrier, and in various countries worldwide including Spain, Palestine, Germany, and the United States. He painted the security fence at Bethlehem with a scene of a hole in the concrete barrier. The hole revealed a glittering beach on the other side.

Banksy is viewed by people in many different ways. To some he is an anti-hero who touches the public conscience. Others think of him as an anti-social rogue who vandalizes public property. Some people who have done business with him consider him to be both a genius and a madman. Many view him as unique and irreverent.

On his website Banksy states that he has bought a taller ladder to use in his work. So there can be no doubt that his graffiti (“street art”) will continue. For their part, the authorities in the United Kingdom will continue to try to identify and subsequently arrest Banksy, the world's most wanted graffiti artist.

PLEASE HELP: Traditional vs non-traditional forms of advertising?

My dissertation is, in part, comparing traditional and non-traditional advertising practices.

Specifically, I'm looing at the wor of Banksy, and showing how agencies could use the urban landscape as an advertising medium.

The fine art of collecting - how to collect contemporary art for pleasure and profit

With the internet making it easier than ever to source artworks, it's relatively simple these days to build up a great-looking collection.

While prices for unique works are increasingly beyond the reach of many, limited editions of, say, 150 plus are financially and widely accessible, making it possible to acquire pieces by major artists for reasonable prices.

There can be a downside, however. While little beats the pleasure a signed work can bring, generally speaking, the larger an edition, the less likely it is to appreciate in value quickly - or even substantially.

Nevertheless, the contemporary art market is full of contradictions, and with growing demand at all levels, recent trends have often seen this assumption overturned.

As an obvious example, Damien Hirst's early prints for Eyestorm consistently fetch $10000-$16000 at re-sale, a very subtantial profit on their original price. More recently, prints by Banksy and other urban artists have proved equally lucrative.

In other words, it's becoming increasingly possible - although by no means a certainty - to make substantial profits quickly with relatively little outlay; although the trick, as always, is knowing what to buy and when to sell.

Buying for fast profit

The art world has a curious attitude to speculation. Buying and selling purely for profit is still regarded as just a little unsavoury, even though the entire art market is dedicated to this pursuit. Perhaps it's because art has such a curiously dual nature, combining aesthetic and cultural worth with a commercial value that can reach very high sums indeed.

Whatever the case, it would be difficult to consistently make money from art without some genuine appreciation and an insight into what will stand the test of time. And many dealers are themselves collectors, at least partly funding their own acquisitions through trading.

Yet it's certainly true that, with contemporary art consistently showing remarkable returns on investment, it's also become an attractive proposition to a very wide range of buyers.

In general, non-specialist speculators often trade in the work of artists whose frequent media coverage makes them well known to the public. And as shown by the two examples mentioned above - Hirst and Banksy - this can certainly reap substantial rewards.

But it's also important to remember that, in an increasingly novelty-driven world, the next big thing is usually just around the corner. 'Celebrity' artists often take on the nature of a trend, and fads can become outdated with dramatic speed. Knowing when to sell such work is vitally important.

Ups and downs in the market aren't just related to artists with familiar public profiles, of course. The art world itself frequently generates its own, 'flavor of the month' buzz. A few years ago, Martin Kippenberger's prices rose dramatically, then levelled just as quickly. Chinese and now Indian contemporary art have been subject to the same kind of intensely fashion-led markets.

Clearly, money can be made through quickly identifying and speculating on trends, but you'll need to have your finger firmly on the pulse. Knowing what's considered exciting is essential, but you'll also have to determine how long this excitement is actually going to last.

Long-term investment - knowing your artists

When it comes to collecting art, you'll often read the following: the safest way to build a collection is simply to buy work you really like.

Such advice seems tailor-made to shield less knowledgeable collectors from potential disappointment, and perhaps even encourage sales of less desirable work. Buy a piece you love and if the value falls no harm has been done. If it gains in price, that's a bonus.

At modernedition, we prefer to look at buying art a little differently.

Of course it's important to purchase work you want to own and view.

But since contemporary art presents real investment opportunities, it makes sense to think carefully about what to add to your collection. After all, look at almost any online art site, and you'll see that prices for fairly standard pieces are often equivalent to what you'd pay for work with far greater investment potential.

Although there's obviously no way of predicting future value for sure, the key is to familiarize yourself as much as possible with the background of artists you're drawn to.

How long have they been practising? Is there a theme or thought process behind their work? Has this evolved coherently over the years?

Artists with at least some degree of complexity and persistent 'vision' are generally more likely to gain steadily in appreciation and price.

You'll also want to know if the artist has achieved some kind of recognition. Is their work held by collections, galleries or museums? Has it been exhibited consistently?

Professional opinion is yet another important factor in trying to determine an artist's long-term prospects. If a large number of critics and academics coincide in their high opinion of an artist, this is another good sign that they will retain or even gain value.

Mid-career artists can be judged much more easily in relation to their existing work; and after all, good art isn't just about something that happens to look nice on a wall.

It's about a certain kind of commitment and an obvious path of development. If all these factors are present, buying probably makes sense. Limited editions by Jeff Koons, for example, were relatively inexpensive 5 or 6 years ago, but with recent record-breaking prices for major works, have also shot up in value.

Even artists who disappear temporarily from the art market radar are much more likely to re-emerge at a later point if they show the 'right' kind of commitment and passion.

Emerging artists and the schlock of the new

New young artists are often fizzing with ideas, many of which can seem ground-breaking or even radical, but the problem is that they have yet to prove their long-term worth.

This said, you can certainly gain an insight into potential by applying the criteria above. It's especially important to determine if they have something genuine to express or are simply employing methods that could, over time, increasingly be seen as just a gimmick.

Of course, if you're looking to make a high return on investment, rapidly emerging artists can prove highly lucrative.

In such cases, it's probably a good idea to invest in as substantial a piece as possible, although as we've seen, editions and multiples can also prove money-earners.

But keep a close eye on auction prices and signs of market fatigue. Such artists might be the talk of the town right now, but will they fulfil their early promise?

If, after a few years, their work appears stuck in a rut and prices seem to be levelling or even dropping, it's time to think twice about their long-term appeal. On the other hand, if they do continue to create great work, any pieces bought for relatively low sums at the start of their careers should steadily rise in value.

Spreading your bets

If you're lucky enough to have substantial sums of money to spend on art, newer artists, as we've just seen, can produce significant return on investment.

But perhaps the best way to offset the risks that they may never fulfil expectation is to 'spread your bets' across a selection of up and coming names.

Buying the work of several different artists might mean settling for less significant works, but with the right kind of knowledge - and luck - hitting a jackpot is still potentially viable.

If you've done your research, the chances are fairly good that at least one - and hopefully more - of your chosen artists will gain in recognition.

And given the phenomenal increase in prices for contemporary art, if that happens, eventual profits could far outweigh the costs of initial purchases, even if other works fail to make the grade.

It's worth remembering that many well-known collectors buy huge amounts of work by new, 'promising' artists.

Charles Saatchi is a particularly good example, and although he is famous for the apparent strength of his collection, a sizeable proportion of artists he has bought over the years have faded into obscurity (you won't see these listed on the website).

However, the phenomenal rise in value of those who went on to beome major names - Peter Doig, for example - have reaped him many millions of dollars in overall profit.

And if those are the rewards, you can probably afford to make the odd mistake.
