 ABRAHAM CLARK was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey in  1726.   While he was young his father hired a tutor to teach him surveying.  While working as a surveyor he taught himself law and went into practice.  He became known as “the poor man’s councilor” as he offered to defend those who couldn’t afford a lawyer.  He married Sarah Hatfield in 1748 and they had 10 children together.  During this  time he entered politics as a clerk of the Provincial Assembly and later became the High Sheriff of Essex County, and was elected to the Provincial Congress in 1775.  In 1776 Clark was appointed as a delegate to the Continental Congress.  They arrived in Philadelphia in June 28, 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence in July.He remained in the Continental Congress through 1778, and then from 1780-1783 and 1786-1788.   He died in 1794 from sunstroke. 

 SUSAN B. ANTHONY  was born (1820)  and raised in West Grove, near Adams, Massachusetts.   She was a prominent civil rights leader who played a large role in the 19th century women’s rights movement to introduce women’s suffrage into the U.S.  She traveled all over the U.S. and Europe and gave 75-100 speeches each year about women’s rights for 45 years.  Anthony also took a prominent role in the anti-slavery movement in New York.  At the age of 29 she was secretary for the Daughters of Temperance.   In 1850, two people  especially inspired her to give all her energies to the Women’s Rights cause;  Horace Greeley, and Lucy Stone.  Then in 1851 she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls, New York.  They became fast friends and traversed the country together giving speeches and trying to persuade the government that men and women should be treated equally.  She and Frederick Douglass were good friends, but they butted heads over the issue of equal rights – he believed in granting suffrage to black men but not women.  She was arrested  for illegally voting in the 1872 presidential election.  She never did pay the fine.  Anthony and Stanton founded the National Women’s Suffrage Association (1869) .   Anthony was vice president at large until 1892 when she became its president.   Susan B. Anthony died of heart disease in 1906.  She was 86.

 ELIHU ROOT  was born  in Clinton, New York in 1845.  He was a lawyer, statesman and the 1912 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.  He was the “prototype of the 20th century ‘wise man’ who shuttled between high-level government positions in Washington, D.C., and private-sector legal practice in New York City.”  (Wikipedia)He was educated at Hamilton College and New York University School of  Law.His wife was Clara Wales,  and they had three children; Edith (wife to U.S. Grant), Elihu, Jr. (became a lawyer), and Edward Wales (became President of Art at Hamilton College).  His political career;  U.S. Secretary of War (1899-1904) under William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.  His accomplishments during that time were reform of the organization of the U.S. Military; enlarging West Point and establishing the U.S. Army War College and the General Staff.  In 1905 President Roosevelt named him Secretary of State.  In 1909 he was elected U.S. Senator from New York and served until 1915.  For his work to bring nations together via arbitration and cooperation Root received the Nobel Peace Prize.  (d.1937-age 91)

JOHN SIDNEY BLYTH BARRYMORE  was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1882.  He was an American actor spanning the years 1903-1941.  He first gained fame as a stage actor in light comedy, then high drama and  finally in groundbreaking portrayals in plays such as Hamlet and Richard III.  Today John Barrymore is mostly known for his roles in movies such as Don Juan (1926), Grand Hotel (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933),  and Twentieth Century (1934).  He was a member of a “multi-generational theatrical dynasty – he was brother of Lionel  and Ethel Barrymore and grandfather of Drew Barrymore.  He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  (d. 1942, Los Angeles, California)

 CESAR JULIO ROMERO, JR  was born in New York City in 1907.   A Cuban American film and television star, he was The Joker  in Batman television series.  When  Batman was made into a film  in 1966, he was the first to play the Joker in a motion picture.  In 1929 his parents lost their sugar import business in the Stock Market Crash and his acting abilities enabled him to support his large family.  In 1942 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the Pacific during World War II.  He was aboard the USS Cavalier and saw action at Tinian and Saipan.   From the 1930s thru the 1950s he played “Latin lovers”   He was in The Cisco Kid series of  six Westerns from 1939-1941.  Romero danced and did comedy in films such as  Week-End in Havana and Springtime in the Rockies during the 1940s.   He was a villain in The Thin Man in 1934, and he co-stared with Tyrone Power in the 1947 Technicolor epic, Captain from Castile.  Some interesting roles he played on television were that of Don Diego’s uncle in some Zorro episodes, and as the head of THRUSH in France in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  Romero never married and it was known around the Hollywood set that he was a confirmed bachelor.  (d. 1994)

 ALLAN  ARBUS  born in New York City in 1918.  He is an actor most notable for his role as Dr. Sidney Freedman on the television series M*A*S*H*.  During the 40s he was a photographer for the U.S. Army and later set up a photographic advertising business with his wife.  He and his wife Amy Arbus had one of their photos in Edward Steichen’s photo exhibition The Family of Man.  Allan and Amy were divorced in 1969 and he was later married to Mariclare Costello.  He had a lead role in Robert Downey’s film Greaser’s Palace (1972) and stared opposite Bette Davis in Scream, Pretty Peggy (1973).  He was also in W.C. Fields and Me (1976).  These led to his role in the M*A*S*H* series.

The Property Market in Sydney It's an Australian Thing

The real estate market in Australia is on the up and in particular the stunning city of Sydney.

Sydney is the largest financial and corporate center in Australia.The city is home to more than half of Australia's top corporations as well as five hundred multinational corporations. There are also ninety bank headquarters located in Sydney. The tourism industry is a large part of the city and there are approximately 2.5 million tourists annually. Attractions such as 'walking' the Sydney Harbour Bridge are booked up months in advance. The city is buzzing with activity and a visit will reveal that the high rise office blocks are full of big business.

Property in Sydney is a valued commodity, as they have the highest median house price of any Australian city. International property investors would be able to compare the cost in housing to that of California in the United States. Australia also has the Western World's highest property prices when measured against rental prices.

The value of Sydney property market has traditionally doubled in value every 7-10 years over the last 100 years. Sydney's current median price for houses is now over $565,000 and leading economic forecasters BIS Shrapnel and Residex predict house prices will continue to rise over the long term.

The city is rich in arts and entertainment and many of the visitors and citizens of the city are interested or involved in this area in some way. Fox Studios Australia opened in 1998 and many famous movies have been produced here including Moulin Rouge, Star Wars Episodes II and III, Superman Returns, and The Matrix. Sydney's Opera House is capable of hosting various styles of opera in its five theaters. The opera house is home to Opera Australia, which is the third busiest opera company in the world. These attractions draw a large number of aspiring actors and actresses as well as tourists. Those looking to invest in oversea property would be keen to invest in property that can be rented out to those in these areas.

Sydney also hosts numerous sporting events.Sydney Harbour has been used for recreational yachting as well Dragon Boat racing. The harbour is also famous for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The headquarters of the Australian Rugby League is also located in Sydney and the National Rugby League Grand Final is held in Telstra Stadium. Famous beaches in the area include Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, Palm Beach and Cronulla Beach.

The property along these beaches is some of the best real estate in the city. Suburbs such as Manly or Mosman are in high demand. Australia offers investment property in the form city apartments that are easily let to city workers.

My advice is to seek out a reliable Australian real estate agent after all Sydney property is an Australian thing

 ALVIN CULLUM YORK   was born in Pall Mall, Tennessee in 1887.  was awarded  a Medal of Honor, for his actions in leading an attack on a German machine gun nest that took 32 machine guns, killed  28 German soldiers and captured another 132.  This action took place during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, during World War I.  In addition to the Medal of Honor he has a Distinguished Service Cross, World War I Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, French Legion d’honneur, French Croix de guerre with Palm, Italian Croce di Guerra, and Montenegrin War Medal.  Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee is named for him as is Alvin C. York Institute – a private agricultural high school.  In 1941 the film Sergeant York was released.  Gary Cooper won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in this film.  It was the highest-grossing movie in 1941.  (d. 1964)

 ERNEST JENNINGS FORD  better known as Tennessee Ernie Ford, was born in Bristol, Tennessee in 1919.  He was a recording artist and TV host.  He was successful in the country and Western, pop, and gospel musical genres.  He started out as an announcer on WOPI-AM Radio.  In l939 we left to attend the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Ohio to major in classical music and voice.  He served in World War II as a bombardier on a B-29 Superfortress in missions over Japan.  Following his service he worked in radio in San Bernardino and Pasadena, California.  It was during his time at the San Bernardino station that he picked up his nickname of “Tennessee Ernie.”  In the forties Ford did musical tours.  During this time a talent scout for Capitol Records brought him to their attention, and Ford ended up signing a contract with them.  In the 1950s he released 50 country singles. Some of these early recordins included “Shotgun Boogie, and “Blackberry Boogie.”  His rendition of “Sixteen Tons” was a big hit in 1955.  From 1956-1961 he had his own prime-time NBC television show, The Ford Show. From 1962-1965 he hosted  The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show.  He has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  And in 1984 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  His induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame came in 1990.  (d. 1991)

 CHARLES ELWOOD “CHUCK” YEAGER was born in 1923, in Lincoln County, West Virginia.  He is a retired Major General in the U.S. Air force and  a veteran of both  World War II and Vietnam.   After  World War II, he became a test pilot of many kinds of aircraft and rocket planes.  He was the first man to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947.  His flying career spans more than six decades and he’s traveled to most parts of the globe.  Yeager broke many other speed and altitude records.  He was the first commandant of the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School that produced astronauts for NASA and the Air Force.  Among the many medals he has been awarded is the Congressional Silver medal (1976) for being first to break the sound barrier,  and the collier Trophy and Mackay Trophy. Though he is now fully retired from the military, he kept busy by serving on the Rogers Commission  that investigated the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

 MARILYN PAULINE “KIM” NOVAK was born in 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.  She is an actress who’s won two Golden Globe Awards and is best known for her performance in the film Vertigo (1958).  She also co-starred in the 1958 film, Bell, Book and Candle.  In 1962, she did Boys’ Night Out with James Garner and Tony Randal.  In 1960  she worked with Kirk Douglas in Strangers When We Meet. There are some 30 plus more films she’s appeared in the years spanning 1954-1991.   Since 1991 Novak has been retired, and is an accomplished artist living in Eagle Point, Oregon, with her husband who is a veterinarian.

 GERALD NORMAN “JERRY” SPRINGER was born in Highgate, London, England in the year 1944.    He is a television presenter best known as the host of The Jerry Springer Show since 1991.  He is also a former Democratic mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio (1977-1979).  He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1965, majoring in political science.  He  earned his Juris Doctor degree at Northwestern University in 1968.   His broadcast career started with Cincinnati radio station WEBN FM.  The NBC affiliate WLWT TV then hired him as a political reporter and commentator.  The Jerry Springer Show debuted in 1991.   In recent years he has made some appearances acting on television series such as Roseanne and The X-Files.  He made cameo appearances on Austin Powers; The Spy Who Shagged Me .  Springer also appeared in an episode of Married. . . With Children and also in the soap opera Days of Our Lives.

(Part 7 of 9) Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones Review

I Love Touring Italy - Campania East of Naples

If you are planing a European tour you should consider visiting the unique area east of Naples in the Campania region of southwestern Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ancient cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii have become giant, sometimes open-air museums that display in utmost detail what life was like in the Roman Empire. Make sure that you experience Mount Vesuvius. In a bizarre sense this mountain gave birth to these unique tourist attractions when it erupted in the year 79 and thus preserved its surroundings for eternity. Don't forget our companion articles on the other areas of Campania including Naples, the territory west of Naples known as Campi Flegrei (Fields of Fire), the Isle of Capri, and Sorrento and the Amalfi coast.

We'll start our tour in Caserta approximately sixteen miles (twenty five kilometers) northeast of Naples, our only stop that has nothing to do with volcanoes. Then we head southwest to Herculaneum some six miles (ten kilometers) southeast of Naples. Afterwards we proceed northeast to the famous Mount Vesuvius, which permanently transformed this region almost two thousand years ago. We'll double back to the Bay of Naples and go southeast past the archeological site of Oplontis and proceed to our final destination, Pompeii. Many of these sites are accessible from Naples via public transportation. Given the crowds and local drivers, you are better off taking public transportation especially in the summer.

While Caserta boasts an Eighteenth Century Cathedral and a Fourteenth Century Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the main reason that you'll want to visit this city of eighty thousand is to admire its much newer Reggia di Caserta (Palace of Caserta). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Bourbon Kings of Naples and Sicily's answer to Versailles. With its twelve hundred rooms, one can say it's at least in the same league. It is perhaps the largest Eighteenth Century building in all Europe. Because the Kingdom was fairly weak when this colossal structure was built, the British historian Edward Crankshaw referred to it as "a colossal monument to minuscule glory."

The Palace of Caserta served as headquarters for the Allied High Command during World War II. Make sure that you visit its staircase, which is said to outdo the one at Versailles, the royal apartments, and the extensive grounds peppered with fountains. The grounds are about three miles (five kilometers) long, and you can take a minibus from the palace to the end of the property. You may recognize the palace from the initial three episodes of Star Wars movies.

On August 24, 79 A. D. Mount Vesuvius destroyed the downwind city of Pompeii and about twelve hours later destroyed the upwind city of Herculaneum as well. When we say destroyed we mean destroyed. Its murderous debris flew at an estimated 60 miles an hour (95 kilometers an hour). In a matter of hours Herculaneum was buried in 65 feet (20 meters) of ash and slag. While the intense heat killed people almost instantaneously most buildings were relatively undamaged.

The Herculaneum ruins were not uncovered until the Eighteenth Century by workers who were digging a foundation for a well. Much of the ancient city remains to be unearthed, largely because the modern city of Ercolano lies on top of it.

Julius Caesar's father-in-law had a Herculaneum villa that may have served as a library; it contained more than 1800 papyrus scrolls. Maybe he just liked to read. The center of this upscale city was closed to cart and wagon traffic and most sidewalks were covered with awnings. The public bathhouse played a central role in people's lives.

Visiting Mount Vesuvius is not for the faint of heart. You may choose to stay away in solidarity with its thousands of victims. It's quite a climb to reach the top. But from the summit the view is beautiful. You will probably find this mountaintop to be even more thought provoking than the usual run of the mill mountaintop.

Mount Vesuvius has erupted on many, many occasions over the centuries. Its last, or more precisely latest, eruption occurred in 1944 destroying several neighboring villages and 88 American B-25 bombers. By far the most destructive eruption was in 79 A. D. when it eradicated the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii killing from 10 thousand to 25 thousand in Pompeii alone. This eruption released an estimated cubic mile (4 cubic kilometers) of ash and rock. Subsequent eruptions have spread ash as far as Istanbul located over 700 miles (1200 kilometers) away. When you consider that Naples, a city of more than a million in an urban area of more than three million is only 10 miles (16 kilometers) away there is reason to be worried. Their emergency evacuation plan covers about 600,000 people and assumes a warning period between 2 weeks and 20 days before the actual eruption. The Osservatorio Vesuvio (Vesuvius Observatory) in Naples constantly monitors this mountain.

Pompeii is a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, as in Herculaneum, a city was destroyed in a manner of hours, and yet its very destruction led to its preservation. Pompeii shows you in extraordinary detail the way people lived at the height of the Roman Empire.

There is reason to believe that Pompeii was subject to volcanic activity, landslides, and earthquakes centuries before its ultimate destruction. A severe earthquake, thought to measure about 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck the area on a feast day in February, 62. Virtually all buildings were damaged, and many were still not repaired when Mount Vesuvius erupted in full in August, 79.

Make sure that you get to Pompeii early to take full advantage of the day ticket. The three-day ticket allows you to visit five archeological sites: Herculaneum, Pompeii, Oplontis, Stabiae, and Boscoreale. I'll let you in on what is hardly a secret: Pompeii was home to a lot of erotic art, some of which is displayed in the Gabinetto Segreto (Secret Cabinet) in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. In Pompeii as well many of the exhibitions are simply unsuitable for children.

What about food? There is something about volcanic soil that makes food tasty and plentiful and gives wine a special zest. The major focus here is on vegetables and fruits. Can you believe purple asparagus? Tomatoes are served every which way, including pizza and spaghetti of course. Try to taste the mozzarella cheese, made from the milk of water buffalo.

We suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Scarola Imbuttunata (Stuffed Curly Endive). Then try Polpi Affogati (Stewed Octopus). For dessert indulge yourself with Zeppoli (St. Joseph's Day Filled Doughnuts). By the way, La Festa di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph's Day) is March 19th. Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We conclude with a quick look at Campania wine. Campania ranks 9th among the 20 Italian regions for both acreage devoted to wine grapes and for total annual wine production. The region produces about 64% red and and close to 36% white wine, as there is little rose. Campania produces 17 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Only 2.8% of Campania wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation. There are three DOCG wines: the red Taurasi, the white Greco di Tufo, and the white Fiano di Avellino. I have tasted the Fiano and really think that it is top of the line.

The Vesuvio DOC, also called Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ) is made in multiple styles from several local grapes that grow on Mount Vesuvius. One of Pompeii's major attractions is the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of the Mysteries) home to more than 60 rooms displaying frescoes, many of which illustrate a young bride's initiation into the cult of Dionysus (Bacchus), the god of wine and debauchery. In 1996 the well-known Campania wine producer Mastroberdino obtained permission to reintroduce some ancient grape varieties on a small plot within Pompeii's walls. These vineyards produce the Villa dei Misteri made from the historic red Piedirosso and Sciascinoso grape varieties. Relatively none of this wine is exported to North America. So this wine gives you one more reason to visit Pompeii.

Entertainment on Time Warner Cable covered the red carpet as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Animation Peer Group honored the 61st Primetime Emmy Award nominees and the Daytime Programming Peer Group honored the 36th Daytime Emmy Award nominees.  The event was held at the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood, CA.

Nominated in the Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour) is Robot Chicken for Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II on Adult Swim.  Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II was created and executive produced by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich under their own Stoopid Monkey Productions, in conjunction with Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico's ShadowMachine Films. The duo also executive produce, write and direct the series, with Green providing many of the voices in the special and the series. Seth Green is nominated for his voiceover work as Robot Chicken Nerd, Bob Goldstein, Ponda Baba, Anakin Skywalker and Imperial Officer.

The 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television.  The Jim Henson Company's newest television series Sid the Science Kid received two nominations, and Sesame Street earned a remarkable 15 nominations.  This year's Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Sesame Street for its 40 years of education and entertainment at the 36th Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, which will be broadcast live on the CW Television Network on Sunday, August 30th, 2009.

About Eye on Entertainment
“Eye on Entertainment”, a division of Eye on Excellence™ Productions, is aired twice weekly on Time Warner Cable in Southern California. The EOE team covers entertainment and red carpet events, and features interviews with successful people in all walks of life, exploring the traits they have in common. Dawna Lee Heising is the executive producer and host of EOE.  She is a long-standing member of SAG & AFTRA, and is Ms. Universe 2009.  The show is produced and directed by John Alsedek, who is also the writer, director & producer of the horror anthology series “AS DARKNESS FALLS”, which runs on Time Warner Cable.  EOE co-producer is John Cox, an educator in the film and video department at Golden West College. The EOE photographer is David McNeil, who is a former executive with United Artists and was one of the developers of Pay-per-View.
